Passports, visas etc.
For UK citizens passports are required - they must be valid for at least six months after the planned return date - visas are not for stays under 90 days. Certain people - exchange students, civil servants on business, journalists, students, aircrew and anyone engaged to a US citizen - are required to have Visas. You will also need to have a return ticket or proof of sufficient funds to buy a return ticket.
Stay Healthy
Ensure that you have ample medical health and accident insurance before leaving. Hawaii is well provided for with medical services.
No immunisations are required.
Take sensible precautions in the sun.
The Sea! The Sea!
Whilst many beaches have lifeguards it is still wise to be cautious in the sea. Be aware of local conditions, heed any advice given and look for signs that may indicate problems to watch for. There are also slight risks from Sharks, Jellyfish and Corals. Be vigilant.
On dry land, beware of mosquitoes and biting centipedes.
Be Safe
Use common sense with regard to personal security. Avoid run down areas at night. Do not leave valuables in the car.
On the Road
Drive on the right hand side of the road. Seat belts must be worn in front seats and children under three should use car seats.
Speeding carries on the spot fines.
When to Go
Any time is a good time. Temperatures are constant around the 24 - 28 degree mark. The climate is kept comfortable by the sea breezes that blow year round. Although winter tends to be a little cooler and wetter, this is the most popular time to visit. This is a function of the weather elsewhere and people looking to escape it.
Cash and Plastic
Credit Cards are widely accepted and ATM machines are easy to find. Check with your card provider before going, if it is backed by Mastercard, Visa or any other major card issuer it should be very easy to make withdrawals from these machines. Traveller's Cheques in US dollars are accepted as if they were regular cheques.
Keeping the Bugs Out
Do not try and take fruit, plants or animals into the US. UK citizens may be asked about where they have come from in the UK as a precaution against Foot and Mouth disease.
