Florida Travel Guide
Key Largo
The 'Keys' extend for a hundred miles south of the Florida mainland, Key Largo is the largest of the chain and the nearest to the mainland. The island first came to prominence following the eponymous film starring Bogart and Bacall. The chief appeal of Key Largo now is the access it offers to watersports, both above and below the surface. There are opportunities for kayaking and a glimpse of the undersea world without getting wet is possible on a number of glass bottom boat trips.
To get the best out of what Key Largo has to offer you need to get under the water. Snorkelling and scuba diving are both well catered for and the place to go is the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park or the Key Largo National Marine Sanctuary. These comprise the only 'live' coral reef in continental USA. This is almost 80 sq miles of stunning coral and gives a chance to see the sea-life that is lured by the reef. The park also has some good beaches for those less actively inclined.
