Africa Travel Guide
African Overview
A continent of extremes - deserts, tropical rainforests, mountains, savannas and farmland. Africa is a continent that can satisfy the adventurous spirit in everyone, go on a safari (shooting with cameras of course), or a mountain trek up Kilimanjaro.
The North
The continent where it all began is still largely untouched and unspoilt, with vast differences in people and cultures throughout it's many countries. From the northern countries of Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia and Libya you can find ancient and medieval cities and monuments at Marrakesh, Fez, Tangier and Casablanca - and of course the famous ancient Egyptian pyramids at Giza. A romantic boat trip up the Nile from Luxor, the home of the Valleys of the Kings and Queens, to Cairo is a dream of many people.
Egypt
Lets get one thing straight right from the start; Egypt is so much more than just a one-attraction place. There are many reasons to visit the country not just the big pointy, very old, stony things that reside in a Cairo suburb.
Egypt is very much a mix of old and new. In the cities expect to see guys in suits going to work in the office; outside the urban areas you will see agricultural life pretty much as it has been for hundreds of years. Of all the worlds Arab nations Egypt aligns itself most closely to the West yet it is still staunchly Muslim by religion. Egypt is also the closest thing the Middle Eastern Arab countries come to being a democracy.

Central Africa
Although the central African states have had their share of trouble and political upheaval the rest of Africa, particularly the east, has a variety of interesting and exciting travel possibilities. Ethiopia has emerged from the 80s as a slightly off the beaten track adventure holiday destination, with ancient Christian civilisations and monuments, and the amazing mountain scenery makes Ethiopia a great, virtually unspoilt, country for travellers. The other two major east African countries for travellers are Kenya and Tanzania with fantastic game reserves and the possibility of shooting (with a camera only, of course) some of the last wild big game animals in the world.
Southern Africa
South Africa is a country still coming to terms with its emergence from apartheid, but don't let this put you off. An amazing country with scenery and wildlife the equal of any African nation. Other countries worth a visit in the south of this huge continent are: Zambia and Botswana.
South Africa
A visit to South Africa lingers in the mind long after the visitor has departed its golden shores. There is so much to see and experience that a brief visit will never be enough. The scenery is breathtaking, the people hospitable; the towns and cities are very modern but it is easy to find solitude in the vast interior. The weather is benevolent, even in the mountains in mid winter a hard frost will soon be burned off by the sun. The coastline has long sandy beaches or craggy wild cliffs. The food and wine are sublime and the price for everything is very reasonable.
